An End to the Global Gag Rule?

By Rachel Sandler, JWI intern

The global gag rule is a draconian measure that denies foreign organizations receiving U.S. family planning assistance the right to use their own, non-U.S. funds to refer, provide or advocate for abortion.

In many developing countries this put an end to safe abortion as well as access to contraceptives and condoms. However, there may finally be a glimmer of hope for women in need of family planning services in developing countries around the world.

Recently, U.S. Senators Barbara Boxer, Frank Lautenberg, and 15 other colleagues introduced the Global Democracy Promotion Act which would permanently repeal this harmful policy. This bill was already introduced in the House of Representatives in July by Congresswoman Nita Lowey.

JWI thanks our champions on Capitol Hill for attempting to end this policy once and for all.
