JWI opposes the elimination of Title X funding

Today the House of Representatives passed HR 1 another in a series of stopgap measures to keep the federal government functioning. Unfortunately, this legislation gutted safety net services for American families. The House leadership included numerous amendments and devoted hours of debate to eliminate funding for family planning and reproductive health services. A must-pass bill about government spending should not hold women’s health hostage.

The irresponsible cutting of social service programs like funding for Title X (family planning and reproductive health) is an attack on women and their access to safe, quality reproductive health. Especially troubling to JWI is the elimination of all funding for Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood provides high-quality, affordable health care and necessary medical services to millions of American women and families. Even supporters of this legislation don’t claim that the elimination of funding for Planned Parenthood will save a single cent in the budget, nor have they explained how the millions of Americans currently served by Planned Parenthood will receive health care. The elimination of Title X would deny preventive health services such as HIV testing, breast and cervical cancer screening, birth control and reproductive care to millions of Americans and would certainly guarantee an increase in the number of unintended pregnancies.

The House has made a grave mistake in cutting this funding. As this bill moves to the Senate for approval, we urge members on both sides of the aisle to protect this critically important funding by opposing the House continuing resolution (HR 1) and all subsequent efforts to attack women’s health.
